Sales Shopping

For those of us who are returning to London, it's exciting to see up to 70% off advertised on window displays. There's nothing like a good bargain, particularly during these times of restraint.

Most newspapers published photos about boxing day, when sales started and the amount of people in the street is just unbelievable!

Florence Welch attracted crowds to Harrods, giving a special performance to celebrate the beginning of sales and there were also queues to get in other department stores such as Selfridges.

But before going sales shopping it's worth organising your wardrobe and be aware of what you already have. We tend to buy without taking into account how we can coordinate everything and avoid having clothes too similar, otherwise it looks as if we're always wearing the same old thing.

Once a friend of mine was impressed with the size of my wardrobe, she thought it would be much bigger, but if you coordinate diverse things you can always look different.

Sales are great for buying things you cannot usually afford, when you want to make the most of your money, it's better to buy less but invest in good quality clothes with a classic style that will last for a few years.

Buy a warm coat, a cashmere jumper, well-made shoes that won't hurt your feet for a few hours and a quintessential handbag... Or that amazing dress which always made you stop staring at the window display...

The most important thing to keep in mind is don't buy just because it's cheap, avoid fast fashion high street retailers, clothes won't last because they're simply not sustainable, either in terms of quality or style.

Go early in the morning to avoid an hectic atmosphere with worn out sales assistants and avid consumers who want to try everything on. If you're a size 10-12 and 4-5 for shoes, don't leave it to the last days, these are the most popular sizes that will run out quite quickly.

It's also worth asking yourself two questions: do I really need it? Do I really love it? Don't get carried away by all the frenzy around you!

But most of all enjoy yourself and make the most of it. A friend of mine only goes shopping twice a year during sales and he always looks smart, for women this may be a bit difficult to achieve but it is undoubtedly a good example!

Don't forget you can also find a good bargain online without leaving the comfort of your home and completely hassle free. Net-a-porter and Farfecth have a good product selection and most designer brands also sell online now...
