Dolce & Gabbana Couture

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana met in 1980 and five years later they would join forces to create one of the most popular Italian brands in the world. Now they embark on a new venture together - couture - presenting their first collection in Taormina, Sicily on July 9.

This is an exclusive event for clients with no invitations for the press. Among their many celebrity fans are Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, Kylie Minogue and Angelina Jolie, to name but a few.

So it's hardly surprising the Sicilian boys decided to create a collection of unique gowns after the success of those spotted on the red carpet at the Costume Institute gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in May.

After all, the image of the Dolce & Gabbana brand is above all a jet-set lifestyle with a strong Italian ethos. One of their iconic pieces is the heavily jewelled corset, a contrive way to embellish women while embracing their femininity.

"When you have a corset, the whole body is inside a box. It's a shape but not too stiff, because it's elastic and satin. It's very feminine, very Mediterranean." Stefano Gabbana

Without the presence of the press it will take some time before images of the collection start emerging, just as Tom Ford, when it comes to luxury, exclusivity is key, particularly today when fashion is so global.

As a process of creation and destruction fashion is always fighting against itself so a unique gown is the ultimate weapon against mass production. For those of us who cannot afford couture, it's all about individual taste and styling power.

"When a woman has her style, she knows how to choose what she likes, not what is trendy." Domenico Dolce

Having said that, there's nothing like couture magic to make a woman dream and hopefully this presentation will be the beginning of a new journey for Dolce & Gabbana. I'm sure it will be a pleasure to watch for those who are fortunate enough to be there!
